It started with Kai.
Before Kai, our founder Anton hadn't spent much time thinking about dog food.
Then suddenly the label on the bag mattered.
Reading labels became comparing foods. Comparing foods eventually became making food at home.
Kai loved it.
But the more he learned, the clearer the gap became.
Good ingredients were easy to understand. Knowing whether the whole diet actually added up was harder.
The enthusiasm was real.The rigour was not.
He's an engineer by training and spent his career modelling risk, most recently in pet insurance.
That background changed the questions.
What does the whole recipe provide?
How do we know?
What can we measure?
And what do we do when the answer isn't what we expected?
Those questions became part of the foundations of Protocol Raw.
The idea started at home. The answer had to go much further.

We think that's where the work belongs.
We wanted to use whole-food ingredients and keep them as close as practical to their original state. Heat changes food.
We chose raw because we think it is the best way to make the food we wanted to make.
That choice brings responsibilities of its own. Without cooking doing the safety work, sourcing, handling and batch testing have to. We built those into the way Protocol Raw works.
